The Downtown Señor Wong's is hoping to change the sleepy St. Paul stigma. A bit heavy on the "Wong" and light on the "Señor," the restaurant serves pan-Asian food with some Mexican twists here and there. The swanky lounge, that often features live DJs, is certainly doing its job in changing the nightlife of the area. The Polynesian drinks are strong, with generous specials (and absinthe) to boot.

Service: Waiter was slow and took, what seemed to be an eternity, to bring anything out (slow even at getting payment for the bill). He definitely was not busy as I saw him standing around with other wait staff. Let's not even get started on the ridiculous "Bouncers" who attack anyone who has a smart sense of humor. Management: We had a big party and were still greeting one another when one waiter was being extremely rude and yelling repeatedly (within 30 seconds) that the path needs to be cleared to get through. One time is plenty and we were already sitting down by the second time he decided to open his hole. The owner was there and should have spoke with this staff but decided not to do anything. Food: Wings tasted like coal (was charred). The rest of the food was mediocre. Bottom Line: Horrible experience and will not recommend to anyone.

I ate a Señor Wongs for the Dining Out for Life event and had the Chef's special - it was out of this world! The waiter told us that chef Cody had done much of his training at a 5 diamond restaurant in Maine - which made his seafood game tops. And tops it was! The Opah (or Moonfish) was seared and seasoned to perfection with a firm and delicate texture. It came atop a sushi rice risotto with time Asian mushrooms and a creamy edamame sauce. WOW! I have had other things on the menu, and have never had any complaints, but have never been wowed like I was with this. Bottom line- if chef Cody is serving up seafood - you better be buying!
